Wooden & Rattan Furniture: Go Tropical Chic

890641_mexican_beach.jpgHolidays got you feeling blah? Could your interior use some lightening and brightening? How about some tropical influence to remind you of warm summer breezes? Maybe you just like the idea of bamboo, rattan, and big, leafy plants. Whatever your needs, tropical chic decor is becoming a very popular choice the world over.

Common tropical motifs might include palm trees, large leafed banana plants, monkeys, animal prints, wicker, leather, and grass cloth. This look is great for homes, kids’ rooms, or restaurants that just want a little tropical kick. (I’ve seen lots of hotel bedroom seating that would go well with this theme, too.)

The keys to a successful tropical chic decor are in the details. Use neutral colors, like white, sand, beige, and light olive green. These can be contrasted with a shock of aqua blue reminiscent of the waters of the Caribbean, as well as the vivid green of potted palm trees and other lush plants. Smaller accents in black and dark brown will lend depth to the color palette.

Choose throw pillows and rugs with tropical or jungle motifs, or even animal prints. Vivid jungle prints with bamboo or driftwood frames would stand out brilliantly against light walls. Try so choose wood, rattan, or wicker for your furniture and flower pots. It’s easy to find commercial bistro furniture in these materials. Light woods and wooden flooring really go great with a tropical chic motif. Keep window treatments light, gauzy, and sheer, or go with something natural like vertical bamboo blinds.

Whatever colors and prints you select, keep in mind that comfort is the main idea behind a tropical setting. Think cool, calm, and relaxed. Use very comfortable pieces that guests can sink into while they enjoy their surroundings.
