Wooden Dining Chairs for Your Bistro: Nanna Ditzel’s Trinidad Chair

nanna_ditzel_trinidad_chair_vx7.jpgOne of my favorite childhood restaurants had ceiling fans that looked like gigantic palm fronds rotating high above. I would stare up at them and pretend that I was dining in some tropical retreat, and the basic hamburger and fries before me were transformed into exotic cuisine by my imagination. I was no longer just a little kid whose legs didn’t reach the ground; I was someone special. I was an explorer.

Ever so often, I will come across a piece of furniture that reminds me of the tropics. Like those crazy palm frond ceiling fans, these other furnishings delight me – albeit in a smaller way. Nanna Ditzel’s Trinidad Chair is one piece that really caught my eye. According to the Bonluxat furniture web site, “Trinidad is one of Nanna Ditzel’s greatest successes. Designed in 1993, it has long since achieved the status of modern classic.”

Well, shiver me timbers; I guess I’m not the only one who likes it.

This fan-shaped chair reminds me of the seats at the fondue restaurant in the Cancun resort where I honeymooned. The slats that make up the chair’s seat and back were designed to play with the light in a room, and I can just imagine that warm, Caribbean sunlight filtering through them and casting interesting patterns on the floor. Very nice!

The Trinidad Chair is available with and without armrests and comes in maple, cherry, beech, birch and walnut, as well as black and white lacquer. You will find that the armless chairs are stackable for easy storage.

I personally think the chair looks like a graceful sea shell, and would work beautifully in any seaside restaurant or bistro that’s looking for new contemporary bistro furniture. Even if your business is land-locked, you can give your customers a taste of the isles with the summery Trinidad.
