Furniture Saves the Day in Attempted Bank Robbery

furniture-saves-day.jpgSalt Lake City police hope that someone has information about an attempted bank robbery that happened on December 3rd. The robbery itself was shaping up to be pretty typical: a male in his thirties, wearing a blue parka, blue jeans, and a mask, entered the Home Savings Bank at 1455 E. 2100 South. He then drew a knife.

Someone on the bank’s second floor activated the alarm, but it’s not that good Samaritan that gets the spotlight in this blog entry; it’s the other person from the second floor who didn’t bother waiting for back-up. They saw what was going on, hefted a chair, threw it into the would-be robber’s back, and knocked him to the ground. The robber stood up and yelled something that was not specified, then fled the bank. (If you have information about the robber’s identity, please call Salt Lake City police at 801-799-3000.)

See? Who needs a handgun when you can just pack a sturdy chair? It gets the point across without loss of life (usually), and it’s not as harsh as a taser (usually). Thinking back to some of the heavy steel bistro area tables I’ve seen, though, I wouldn’t recommend hurling them at anyone except in emergency situations. You might wrench your back or cause some severe property damage.

In all seriousness, though, can’t you just imagine the scene when the chair hit the robber and knocked him out flat? If I’d been there, I’d have been frightened – but not too frightened to laugh out loud. (I guess it’s a good thing I wasn’t there.)

Maybe now thugs will think twice about trying to knock over a place with heavy-duty furnishings!
