Furniture Design Tips: Red White & Blue Any Time

818974_stairs.jpgThe upcoming fireworks on New Year’s Eve have me thinking of the fireworks we enjoy every Fourth of July here in the States. (And the cold air has me thinking of the warmth of summertime, and missing it greatly.) But you don’t need to wait for a holiday to start redoing your interior in shades of red, white and blue. You don’t even need to be patriotic, or even American; these colors complement each other beautifully, and there are many ways you can make them a part of your decor.

Have you considered denim as a fabric for your upholstered pieces or pillows? It’s sturdy, easy to care for, and comes in an entire palette of lovely blue shades, from faded sky blue to darkest indigo. Try it as a covering for your new upholstered bistro chairs. It would make a stark and lovely contrast to, say, white planters filled with flowering red plants. White-washed furniture looks great with red accents or blue fabrics, too.

Displaying dinner wear is a very easy way to put red, white, and blue on exhibit. Spode and other brands offer beautiful pieces in blue and white or red and white. This doesn’t require you to spend a fortune; a mismatched collection in a white-washed cabinet can add a great down-home look with a dash of elegance.

Table covers and linens can also be found in checkered prints, calico, or toile. These can be used to add color without being too heavy-handed.

And don’t forget the power of flowers! When it’s springtime, plant a path of red, white and blue blossoms for a playful look. Or use silk flowers to get this effect year round.

If you are a patriot at heart, you can find all kinds of items with the American Flag theme. Check out antique or thrift stores for unique pieces, and have fun redecorating your space!
